What are the different types of tabetop gaming dice for your dice rollers and dice towers?
In Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), a standard dice set typically consists of seven polyhedral dice, each with a different number of sides. These are:
- D4 (Four-sided die): This pyramid-shaped die is often used for small damage rolls, like daggers or specific spells, and for some healing effects. It’s notorious for being uncomfortable to step on!
- D6 (Six-sided die): The classic cube, familiar from many other board games. In D&D, it’s used for weapon damage (especially for common weapons like short swords), rolling for character ability scores during creation, and certain spells or abilities (e.g., a rogue’s Sneak Attack).
- D8 (Eight-sided die): This octahedron (two pyramids joined at their bases) is commonly used for damage from medium-sized weapons (like longswords or battleaxes) and for various spells.
- D10 (Ten-sided die): Often shaped like a pentagonal trapezohedron, the D10 has faces numbered 0-9. It’s used for damage from some weapons and spells.
- D00 (Percentile die): This is typically another D10, but its faces are marked in tens (00, 10, 20, etc., up to 90). It’s always rolled in conjunction with a regular D10 to generate a result from 1 to 100 for percentile rolls, which are used for determining chances of success, random tables, or specific spell effects. (A roll of 00 and 0 usually signifies 100).
- D12 (Twelve-sided die): This dodecahedron is one of the less frequently used dice in a standard D&D game, primarily for damage from heavy, two-handed weapons like great axes or certain powerful spells.
- D20 (Twenty-sided die): The most iconic and frequently used die in D&D. It’s the “decider” die, used for the vast majority of checks in the game: attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks. Rolling a 20 (critical success) or a 1 (critical failure) on a D20 often has special consequences.
Beyond these standard seven, you might occasionally encounter:
- D2 (Two-sided die): Essentially a coin flip, used for binary decisions.
- D3 (Three-sided die): Less common, but can be used for very small randomized outcomes.
- D100 (Single D100): While the D10 and D00 are typically rolled together for percentile results, some specialized D100s exist as a single die.
